Liatra followed Priya to the center of the hall then opened the portal. This time, the light streamed directly from her to create the ethereal hub because we were traveling to her bind point in Briarton. When Meslar Tomp stepped toward the High Templar and began muttering excitedly, I paced away to give them some privacy.

The last thing I’d wanted was to stir things up with a potential ally, but my lady friend was right. My people fought next to the Templars in the west, and I’d even helped annihilate the witches in Briarton, which freed up the two Templars who’d been patrolling there for gods knew how long. Whether he had commitments or not, sending two strangers to fight alongside us didn’t make sense.

Lucera’s voice came to me on a wave of self-contradiction.

Make Friends.

Well, maybe Baldric wasn’t the kind of friend we needed.

Mashini followed me away, then Prantu, Desini, Roshan, Charney, and Emilia. When they formed a semicircle around me, I noticed the elven woman’s skin glowed as if she hadn’t broken a sweat all day, despite an elongated battle against a bunch of wild men.

“Master,” Desini said.

“Desini.”

“Will you deny his offer of aid?”

“Not outright. If he wants to send anyone with us, it just makes us better. You saw that crazy priestess flying on that beast near the Queen’s Forest. Her magic-spewing rod. We have to be ready.”

“Indeed. She is a demigod.”

“I didn’t know you had that word for it here. It’s quite apt. But she’s weakened, and I want to hit her good and hard while she is.”

Emilia spoke in a whisper. “Shénhuà. We should go.”

My forehead wrinkled. “What?” I peered past her. Meslar shook a finger in our direction. Baldric shook one at him.

“Tempers are becoming… heightened. The high Templar threatens your defender with treason.” Her elven hearing was an asset Priya hadn’t acquired from her own heritage. “Perhaps I’m out of line, but may I suggest our absence could put an end to their quarrel, and preserve Meslar’s place among his brothers?”

I eyed Meslar. His long tangles of hair reached halfway down his back, his eyes were swollen and grey underneath, yet he debated on our behalves. Emilia’s insight rang true.

“Your wisdom is appreciated and your logic sound. I don’t want to cause a rift.”

We paced toward the portal. Emilia hurried forward to match my gait. “I would happily engage the queen on your behalf, Gemini. Guiles asked that you be assisted in every way and, like Meslar, the queen holds the legends of the mythic near to her heart. When I was a child, she regaled us of stories about your kind. I’m sure she would send a regiment, if asked.”

The image of bloody elven heads, lost appendages, and lost lives flashed in still images.

“I appreciate it, but your people have paid enough of a price because of me. Taking out the High Priestess is the only way I’m going to be able to look myself in the mirror. Even less, the queen in the eye.
